Legal Notes on Georgia and The South

Another Georgia Innocence Project Victory

Posted by Maggie on December 11, 2007

John White was released yesterday after he was sentenced to life for a rape he didn’t commit in 1979. White is now 48 and was found guilty based on hair analysis, but DNA has proven the hair is not his. More than that, it’s been traced to another person in Georgia’s DNA system.

White was originally paroled in 1990 but later had parole revoked after convictions for drug possession and robbery. I’m not surprised by the later crime. White was in his early 20’s when he went to prison and has probably known no other life. Hopefully the State will give him some kind of recompense for all those lost years. Good work, GIP.

Update:Here’s another more thorough look from the Daily Report.
