Legal Notes on Georgia and The South

At Least It Wasn’t a Donut

After being a defense attorney for only a few months, I quickly began to fear cops.  Years of being taught that the police were there to protect you evaporated after a handful of cases where cops arrested someone just because they could. The stories from these cases are often hard to believe, just like the one on the news today.

An example of this made the AP wire and sadly it turns out it’s from an Atlanta suburb. The AJC also reports on the cop who ate a burger that was too salty and arrested the McDonalds worker who made it.

There are more details in the AJC story, specifically this classic cop line:

[The defendant], the mother of a 1-year-old child, had made several inconsistent statements, [the officer] said.

When I heard this story reported on the news this morning there was a totally different set of facts set out. I’m not really sure what’s going on, but it doesn’t seem right that when all a regular person would do is complain and ask for a new burger, a cop decides that an arrest is the best course of action.
